To get that conclusion, the researchers conducted observations in the eyes of a shark by using the technique of micro-spectrophotometry. They observe the cells making up the retina of the eye in 17 species of sharks caught in the area of Queensland and Western Australia.

The researchers found that most species of sharks have only rod-shaped cells. These cells are very sensitive to light, able to distinguish contrast and color vision possible. However, the cells were not able to distinguish colors.
"Our results show, compared with the color, contrast with the background may be much more important for the shark to identify the object," said Nathan Scott Hart, the leader of this research project originating from the University of Western Australia.
